12/20/2008 - Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - David Krejci and Shawn Thornton scored third- period goals to lift the Boston Bruins to a 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at TD Banknorth Garden.
Marc Savard also scored and Stephane Yelle added an empty-net goal for Boston, which has won four straight and nine of its last 10. Manny Fernandez stopped 32 shots in the victory.
The Bruins have also captured 13 straight at home and improved to 13-1-1 at the Garden. They began the home slate with a 2-1 shootout loss to Pittsburgh and a 4-2 setback to Toronto in October. Boston's win streak is its longest at home since a 16-game run during the 1975-76 season.
Joni Pitkanen and Ray Whitney scored for Carolina, which had won two in a row and failed to register a point for the first time in seven games (3-1-3). Rod Brind'Amour assisted on both goals for the Hurricanes, while Cam Ward made 32 saves in defeat.
The game was tied heading into the third period, but Krejci gave Boston the lead for the first time just 3:54 into the stanza. Vladimir Sobotka raced into the Carolina zone along the right wing and sent a cross-ice pass to the left circle for Krejci, who flipped a high shot past Ward for his 12th goal of the season.
Thornton made it a 3-1 game eight minutes later, as he picked up a loose puck behind the Carolina net, skated out to the right of Ward and snapped a shot past the short side for his second goal.
Whitney pulled the Hurricanes within one with 4:36 remaining, whacking home the second rebound of an initial shot by Scott Walker, but Yelle found the empty net in the closing seconds to seal it.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Pitkanen just under five minutes into the game. Pitkanen received a cross-ice pass from Brind'Amour and beat Fernandez with a shot from the left circle for his third goal.
Ward stopped all nine Boston shots he faced in the opening period, but the Bruins tied it at 7:06 of the second. Phil Kessel, who had a goal disallowed a few minutes earlier on an obvious high stick, sent a pass into the slot and the puck deflected off a couple of players. Savard was the beneficiary of the bounce, skated to the left of the crease and lifted a shot over Ward for his 10th goal.
Game Notes
Boston's Patrice Bergeron left the ice in the second period after a collision. He was able to skate off under his own power...Kessel has a 17-game point streak, the longest for a Bruin since Adam Oates recorded points in 20 straight games from January 7 through February 20, 1997...Brind'Amour has a six-game assist streak...The Hurricanes were 1-for-3 on the power play, while Boston failed on its lone attempt with the extra skater.
